Gerard M. Mauer Memorial Sword Presentation

In Memory Of
Gerard M. Mauer
1925 - 2000

Gerry Mauer was an active member of the Board of Directors of the Philadelphia Council for over fifteen years. During his terms of service, in addition to being an active Director, he served as Treasurer and as Vice President.

One of his most treasured duties was the presentation of the swords to the honored NROTC midshipmen at both Vi1lanova University and the University of Pennsylvania at the Spring Review and Awards Ceremony. It is for this reasons that the Philadelphia Council wishes to honor his memory by identifying each sword as the Gerard M. Mauer Memorial Sword. Gerard M. Mauer began his Naval career in 1943 when he enlisted in the Navy. He was assigned to the V -12 Program at Dartmouth College. Upon completion of this training he was commissioned as an Ensign and ordered to the USS Leyte, CV 32. The ship was under construction, so that he became a "plank owner." He was assigned to the Engineering Division and remained aboard until the end of World War II. Upon his discharge, Gerry enrolled at Vi1lanova University to complete his education. He graduated in 1949 with a degree in Civil Engineering. During this time he participated in Naval Reserve cruises and maintained an active Reserve status. With the start of the Korean War he was recalled to active duty and served aboard the USS Bon Homme Richard, CVA 31, until 1953, after which he resumed his active reserve status for 15 years.
