Adopt-a-Sailor Program
When a Navy ship visits Philadelphia, there are many young sailors aboard who are visiting our city for the first time. In addition, there are many young sailors attached to the local commands who are far from their homes.
The visiting sailors and our local sailors (particularly at the holidays) appreciate someone taking an interest in them through our Adopt a Sailor program.
Through our Adopt a Sailor program, interested volunteers can “adopt” one or more sailors for a minimum of four to six hours to show them our city (if they are on a visiting ship) or perhaps invite a local sailor to share a meal during the holidays.
The Program is completely voluntary. We have an email list of those members who have indicated an interest and might be available when asked. When we are advised from the ship or local command, who aboard would like to be adopted, we send the details about the prospective “adoptee” to our e-mail list and try to facilitate a match.
