union league October 5th - Navy Day Lunch at the Union League
Join our Council as we commemorate the 235th birthday of the Navy. Special guest Speaker will be The Honorable Juan M. Garcia, III, Assistant Secretary of the Navy (Manpower and Reserve Affairs). union league October 11th - Philadelphia Council Golf Outing
To commemorate the 235th Birthday of the U.S. Navy, a special golf outing will be held at the BALA Country Club in Philadelphia on Monday, 11 October 2010. Twenty (20) Sea Service members of the Navy, Marines, and Coast Guard will play as our guests. Navy League members and non-members are encouraged to participate. Non-golfers can join us at the Social Hour and Awards Dinner for the low cost of $25. Also sponsorship of a military golfer and dinner for you is available at $140. Click here to register.

Aug 2, 2010 - Vice Adm. Miller takes helm of Naval Academy
Vice Adm. Michael H. Miller, the guest speaker at our Navy Day Luncheon last year has become the Naval Academy superintendent. Click  here for more.

USS Bulkeley Celebrates with Council - July 3, 2010
CO Chris DeGregory and the crew of the DDG 84 spent Independence Day weekend in Philadelphia at Penn's Landing. Our Council was honored to be guests at a reception on the ship. The Council was presented with two gifts of appreciation from CO DeGregory and Council President Fran O'Brien presented the ship with a $1,000 donation to her MWR fund. Guests enjoyed the Philadelphia Orchestra and an amazing fireworks display. On July 4th, the crew participated in the city's annual parade on the Parkway and visited the Veteran's Hospital to present certificates of appreciation to local veterans. Many thanks to event sponsors Anheuser Busch and EJ Gallo Family of Wines for their generous donation of beer and wine. More photos here.

USS Philadelphia 'Finishes Strong' Following 33-Year Service
One of our "adopted ships", Los Angeles-class attack submarine USS Philadelphia (SSN 690) was decommissioned June 25 during a ceremony at Naval Submarine Base New London in Groton, Conn. Click here for more.

Decommissioned USS Forrestal (CVA 59) comes to Philadelphia
The decommissioned carrier USS Forrestal arrived at the Naval Sea Systems Command’s inactive ships facility at the Philadelphia Naval Ship Yard on Friday June 18. The Navy has said the 55 year old ship will be disposed of but final plans have not yet been made. Click here for more. Colonel Harvey C. Barnum receives the Commodore Barry Award at our Annual Dinner
Over 300 people, the largest crowd in the history of our Annual Dinner, were on hand at the Hyatt, Penn's Landing to see Medal of Honor recipient Colonel Harvey C. "Barney" Barnum, Jr (USMC Ret) receive the Commodore Barry Distinguished Citizen Award.  General James N. Mattis USMC, Commander, U.S. Joint Forces Command (USJFCOM) was our guest speaker. US Coast Guard Sector Delaware Bay Honored by Philadelphia City Council; June 4, 2010
City Councilman Frank DiCicco, assisted by Councilman James Kenney and Council President Anna Verna, who officiated, recognized the achievements and leadership of the Sector Delaware Bay Station located n Philadelphia. Captain Meredith Austin, was unable to take part since she has recently been deployed to the Gulf of Mexico. Captain Todd Gatlin represented the Sector and spoke on her behalf. The USCGC William Tate, which has been adopted by our Council and is stationed at the Sector, celebrated its 10th anniversary on June 4th and Captain Gatlin welcomed all Councilmembers to visit. June 4; Coast Guard celebrates 10th Anniversary of USCGC Wm.Tate (WLM560)
Our Council together with the Delaware River Waterfront Corporation sponsored a celebration commemorating the 10th anniversary of the Coast Guard Cutter William Tate (WLM 560) at Penn's Landing. The featured speaker was RADM Wayne E. Justice, USCG Coast Guard Fifth District Commander. Pictures are here.

 


Philadelphia Council Speaker Releases Barry Biography
Tim McGrath, who spoke at our 2009 Member Dinner at Flourtown Country Club, has released his biography of Commodore John Barry. Click here to read a review of the book published in the Wall Street Journal.

 


Council Proclaims the Adoption of USS Wayne E. Meyer (DDG 108)
Ship Sponsor Anna Mae (Mrs. Wayne E.) Meyer and crew representative Lt. Albert A. Stowe were on hand as our Council signed the adoption proclamation and accepted our Council's honor. The adoption means our Council will support the ship and her crew as long as she is active. The proclamation will be displayed on the ship which is home ported in San Diego. Also in attendance was the Ship's Maid of Honor, Anna Sexias.  Photos are here.
